The Absolutely Mindy Theme Song[writing] Contest!

Have you heard???

Kids Place Live
***presents***
The Absolutely Mindy Theme Song[writing] Contest!

WHAT!?! The Absolutely Mindy Show on Sirius/XM’s Kids Place Live is in big time need of an official theme song!

WHO’S GONNA WRITE IT?! Anybody but Mindy. That means YOU! Civilians welcome, artists welcome, Wilco welcome…

HOW LONG’S IT GOTTA BE?!? I don’t know…how long are theme songs? How bout 30 seconds to one minute long?

WHEN DOES IT HAFTA GET IT DONE BY?!? All entries must be snail mailed and postmarked by August 14th.

DOES IT GOTTA BE ON A CD?!? Yup! MP3’s and all that kind of techno interweb stuff doesn’t work for airplay. Just an ol’ fashioned compact disc will do the trick!

WILL I GET TO HEAR MY SONG ON THE RADIO?! Yup again! Mindy will try to air all entries received throughout the week of August 17 to the 20, and a final song will be chosen on Friday, August 21!

WHAT’S THE PRIZE?! The winning songster will be interviewed "LIVE" on The Absolutely Mindy Show, and have their winning song played every afternoon, from coast to coast on Kids Place Live UNTIL WE GET TIRED OF IT. Plus your kids will be so proud!

So what are you waiting for?! Unleash your inner songbird and…wait, no scratch that. Songbirds shouldn’t be leashed in the first place. You know what we mean.

All songs become property of the Sponsor, SIRIUS XM and XM Radio. See Official Rules for details and how to enter by going to www.sirius.com/kidsplacelive or www.xmradio.com/onxm/channelpage.xmc?ch=116.

Submissions should be mailed to:

Young Love

If you haven't been following along on the Absolutely Mindy show, ScribbleJim took care of Mindy's pet hot dog "Frankfurter" while Mindy was away at camp. But then Frankfurter went missing...only to be found again snuggling with a Go Tart. (Hope I got that almost right.)

Thanks to ScribbleJim for sending along the photos!

We Saw Robbie today!

With Robbie's big news this week, we knew we had to get to the Robbie Schaefer kids' show at Jammin' Java this morning and wish his safe travels. Robbie is heading to Uganda this evening for a wonderful kids' music exchange. To read more, visit Robbie's blog.

The show at Jammin' Java, though a Sunday morning one, was well attended and full of kids and parents having a GREAT time! We love the way Robbie works with the audience and his wonderful songs. His new "Water" song really is wonderful -- it reminds us of the stylings of Justin Roberts that really get us in a good mood. But it is Robbie, all Robbie. And we all love him.

Chloe claims that Robbie is her BFF and is ready to tell him everything that is on her mind (poor Robbie).

    Robbie's African Adeventure

In case you haven't heard yet (though you probably heard before we did), Robbie is headed to Africa next week forwhat seems to be a really incredible journey. This is a great next step in kids' music. Uniting children throughout the word, so as they age, they have a worldview that can help to improve lives everywhere. The CMN work that XM does is wonderful in helping our kids build more compassion, but this "worldview" is yet another wonderful way that KPL is helping our kids to learn about the lives of others, and I salute the KPL team for this.

We wish you well on this journey, Robbie, and look forward to hearing more as you travel. Bon voyage (though if we follow our plans, we will wish you well in person tomorrow).

Read about robbie's trip on his blog.

Lunch Money in the Rumpus Room

Today we were thrilled to get back to the Rumpus Room at XM in DC after over a month and see Lunch Money perform live in the XM LiVE Performance Studio! We always love to hear Lunch Money live, and while we heard a couple of the new ones in NY, we heard another couple of new songs and think they rock! We cannot wait for the next CD!

We had a fabulous time in the Rumpus Room. The KPL "minion" Ali does a great job keeping everyone entertained and organized. Mindy and various family members were there for the show.

For various reasons, the band was not planning on playing their KPL hit "It Only Takes One Night To Make a Balloon Your Friend," but a kid requested it. Then there were some technical difficulties, so the band played it, not for airing, but as filler while the connections/wires were being fixed. At the end of the show, someone gave Molly (I think) a red mylar balloon, and guess what happened?? It flew away! Red ones go to Paris, don't they?

Go check out the Lunch Money concert schedule and get out to see them live if you can!

    Make Your Own Pet Wave

Here's all the information you need to make your own pet wave! (With a grown-up's help.)

You're going to need a clear plastic bottle with a cap, baby oil, water and some food coloring. (Hint: the smaller the bottle, the less baby oil you'll need.)

First, fill the bottle half-way with water and add a couple of drops of food coloring. Mine's blue, like the ocean, so that I can pretend to be a shark. ScribbleJayne made her pet wave yellow, no special reason, she just likes yellow. Next, fill the top half of the bottle with baby oil. Twist or glue the cap on the bottle really tight (so your pet doesn't get away) and... you've got a new pet! Just tip the bottle back and forth to get your wave going. Pretty cool, huh?

What color will you make your pet wave? Do you have any other pets?

    Your pals,
    ScribbleJim & ScribbleJayne

Brady Rymer at XM - 12 Jun 2009

Yesterday, we were excited to get back to the Rumpus Room at XM in DC and see Brady Rymer and the Little Band That Could perform live in the XM LiVE Performance Studio! We've seen them a couple times before, once in Georgia, and love his enthusiasm, music and smile.

We spent a bit of time in the upstairs waiting area. The kids were asked if they would like to make some recordings for possible use on the station, and they all loved it -- they had to say "Sirius/XM Kids Place Live!" Camille ran around chasing one very fast little toddler who feels right at home at XM, wandering down this way and that.

We finally got to head into the performance theater. Brady in the band wandered in before Mindy got to play her "joke" on them. Brady jumped right into playing, starting off with the logical choice "Here Comes Brady Rymer and the Little Band That Could." The band members at this show were Brady on lead, Seth Farber on keybaords, Liz Queler on mandolin and vocals and then Chris Roselli stuck over in the drum box.

The concert was fantastic. Great energy, great selection of songs (though I would have loved to hear 15 more, of course). The audience really got into "I Found It!" Brady played older songs along with songs from the latest CD and even a couple new tunes, which we can't wait to hear on his next CD! He finished up on a high note with the popular "Road Trip." What fun!

We had a great time hanging out for a long time after the show. I can't believe that we won't get to go back to XM for at least a month! A whole month! How will we make it that long?

Ziggy Marley and Laurie Berkner's "Future Man, Future Lady" is #8 on the 13under13 this week. While I don't think that they have a video for that song, Ziggy does have this one from his new Family Time CD:

    Dresser Drawer Dining

The pictures are of Miles and Ella of Soutch Carolina. Mindy did a little Sneak Attack call on them this afternoon and told them that they were going to be eating dinner while sitting in dresser drawers. They did it! Miles thinks it’s pretty funny that Mindy is stuck in a drawer, so she thought it was important that he knew how it felt ;)

    Video: Recess Monkey

Recess Monkey's "Haven't Got A Pet Yet" is #5 on the 13under13 this week. Recess Monkey is an awesome kindie pop group from Seattle, and we just love their creativity and music! Here's "Haven't Got A Pet Yet," but you really should check out their other videos, too!

    13under13 - 5 June 2009

Mindy hosted this week and started out with a superhero set in honor of "We R Superheroes" leaving the countdown. While the Milkshake mix is awesome and timely, the Wierd Al one is not so great. Personally, I would have chosen the Rebecca Frezza, Justin Roberts, Ralph's World or ..... over the Weird Al one.

    Video: The Jimmies

The Jimmies's "Peanut Butter Polka" is #5 on the 13under13 this week. While I don't think that they have a video for that song, they do have a bunch of really fantastic videos. We love the "Cool to be Uncool" video:

    Video: Ben Rudnick and Friends

Ben Rudnick and Friends's "A Frog Named Sam" is #4 on the 13under13 this week. Not only do we love the song, but the animation in the video is pretty awesome fun:

    Video: Gustafer Yellowgold

Gustafer Yellowgold's "Panther Stamps Pants" is #3 on the 13under13 this week. The video for that song is pretty cool, but I don't think it is available online (buy the DVD!). Here is one that's on youtube, called "Getting in a Treetop":

    Video: Rocknoceros

Rocknoceros's "PINK!" is #2 on the 13under13 this week, and we think that their "PINK!" video is pretty cool:

Is it Kids Place Live? of Adults Place Live? Or Family Place Live?

What do you think? Who in your family listens to Kids Place Live? Do your kids listen on their own? Or do you listen with them? Do you ever listen in when not with your kids? If so, what shows do you listen to?

Captian Bogg and Salty's "Never Smile at a Crocodile" is #1 on the 13under13 this week. I don't think they have released a video of that song yet, but here is one that they have made for "Pieces of 8ight":

Randy Kaplan at XM - 28 May 2009

Yesterday, we were excited to get back to the Rumpus Room at XM in DC for our third time in May! It was so great to see Randy Kaplan perform live in the XM LiVE Performance Studio! We've seen him a couple times before, but never for a full show, and it was great! We love his sense of humor and way of blending song and outrageous stories.

While we waited in the lobby for Mindy to come get us and bring us upstairs, weren't we surpised to see Robbie come down. And then Mindy. And then Kenny and Jinx walked in too! Wow! I don't think I've ever seen all four of them in one place! After we went up to the waiting area outside the performane studio, Mindy sat down to rad a story. And Robbie sat on the floor right in front of her. And Kenny sat in his lap. What a silly crew they are!!!

Chloe was thrilled that he did "Shampoo Me" and I was so happy that he played the "Grape Juice Hesitation Blues." He got the audience interacting on songs that they had never heard before. Everyone had a blast, but the loyal KPL listeners were quite anxious for him to get to the two songs that KPL has been playing (over and over) lately. After the show, he hung out with the fans until he had to run to catch his train. Camille and I found it amusing that Randy had the "Ladybug Without Spots" verse order taped to the guitar.

    Traveling Roadshow

    From the KPL website:

3RD Annual Traveling Roadshow on Kids Place Live!

The Traveling RoadShow is back! Once again, we’re teaming up with the Children's Miracle Network for a cross-country broadcast tour to raise money and awareness for local Children's Hospitals all across North America. We'll bring microphones, tape recorders, video cameras and assorted goodies on the road with us as we visit 11 different Children's Hospitals in 14 days and broadcast a new show from a different hospital every day, starting the day after Memorial Day.

We can't wait to introduce you to some of the amazing kids who will be part of this year's RoadShow. There’s probably a Children’s Hospital in your area, and that means that there are some really brave kids and families facing some big-time problems. You and I can't make this stuff go away on our own, but we CAN help! Money buys medicines, builds buildings, and pays for all of the equipment that doctors and nurses use to treat critically ill children. Ask your Mom and Dad to donate now! Childrensmiraclenetwork.org

Also, if you are shopping with your adults in WalMart or Sam’s Club between May 1st and June 14th, ask about donating a dollar to the Children’s Miracle Network at the checkout counter. (Maybe you could ask Mom or Dad for that instead of those skittles you were eye-ing-up...). The money will go to help support the local Children's Hospital in your area and the Children's Miracle Network.

Just like years past, if you have a special story you'd like to share about your local Children's Hospital or the RoadShow, send an email to request116@sirius-radio.com or xmkids@xmradio.com and put "Road Show" in the subject line.

    See ya' on the road!
    Mindy, Robbie, Kenny and Jinx

Books of Wonder - Peter Glassman

On yesterday's show, Mindy interviewed Peter Glassman, the owner of Books of Wonder, "New York City's oldest and largest independent children's bookstore, as well as the city's leading specialist in children's literature both new and old."

They talked about a number of great series for kids to read. One series that he mentioned is the Oz Series books. Camille has read all 14 books in the original series, however, what was very interesting was to learn more about the history of the books, like that one came out every year right before Christmas, and giving these books turned into a Christmas tradition.

Another favorite of Peter's was Half-Magic by Edward Eager. Camille and I have enjoyed many of the books in this series as well. Even though the books were written in the 1950's, they are timeless in some sense.

Another series he talked about was Sluggers, which Chloe thinks sounds pretty awesome.

Camille and Chloe can't wait to get to NYC and visit Peter Glassman's Books of Wonder store!

Billy Jonas at the Rumpus Room

Last Friday (how have I gotten so far behind??), we were lucky enough to be able to get to see Billy Jonas live in the XM LiVE Performance Studio (aka Rumpus Room).

Along with getting to go to an awesome live concert, we also met up with new and old friends. Everyone was so nice, and so happy to be there for the concert. I "re"met someone from past Rumpus Room shows (Kit, thank you for being was SO nice and friendly) and chatted a bit with the mom of Scrap Metal creator Danny - Chloe was fascinated with Danny, but too shy to say anything to him. We also enjoyed being with a fellow kids' music blogger, OWTK Jeff and his family. And, of course, Chloe loved being with her BFF + .5, Mindy. I felt so lucky to be a part of the Kids Place Live family!

On top of all that, we were thrilled to be a part of the audience at the Billy Jonas show. Billy entertained us all and happily described the "reclaimed" instruments that he used in his bangin' and sangin'. He sang some of our favorites but also made up a new song on the spot, called "Ducks and Racecars." The kids really got into the call and response parts and the fireworks applause, too.

We look forward to hearing this show on the radio some day soon!

The Sippy Cups at the Rumpus Room

    Photos, Video and Recap here.

Today we took metro over to XM for a Rumpus Room concert featuring The Sippy Cups. We loved being back in the building, seeing Mindy and hearing a wonderful concert by The Sippy Cups. Mindy even got to be a circus performer during the show!

    Changes at KPL

First Mindy has changed from 3-7pm to a shorter 3-6pm. We're still not used to her shorter show, though it is nice to hear Robbie a little earlier in the evening.

Now, I just noticed that the Friday evening lineup has been shifted as well. Instead of 13under13 at 10pm and the weekly "special" at 11pm (ET), the 13under13 will be at 8pm and the special at 9pm. I like that change!

    Laurie Berkner LIVE!

Did you catch the show?? Were you able to go?? Please share any thoughts or photos, we'd love to hear. (We were up in the woods and not able to tune in......) I hope that the concert was amazing and that the band was rocking out!

    Interview - Sally Ride

While we only caught part of the interview (we were up in the mountains where we had "shadows") with Sally Ride, my girls were left with a very lasting impression. I think that Mindy and Sally talking together is one of the absolute, very best things that we have ever heard on Kids Place Live, no kidding. While we love the music and book interviews, and even more the interviews with people with cool jobs (like that LEGO design guy), this one topped them all. Sally has been into outer space. And she shared it with the kids. The awesome, so called "immature" fun of being in space -- like juice balls in space.... along with her mom's fear of Sally's mission. I am always so happy to hear when adults with extremely interesting, high-pressure jobs can still find the fun and relate that fun to the kids.

So thank you Sally Ride and Mindy, for one of the most awesome KPL interviews ever.

Mindy hosted this week and started of with a Billy Jonas set in honor of "What Kind of Dog are You?" falling off the 13under132 after a nice run. I was thrilled to see "Kick It" join the ranking, though a little surprised that it wasn't that new Hannah Montana song (that I really don't like....).

    Book Hour - Jennifer Ward

On Mindy's show today, she was joined by Jennifer Ward author of I Love Dirt!: 52 Activities to Help You and Your Kids Discover the Wonders of Nature.

The activities sound pretty interesting, although basic. My kids (who are likely older than the target) love to get outside and do their own thing and really don't like for me to direct them, so I'm not sure it would work for us. The advice given on the show is mostly "natural" to us already. But I will likely put it on my library list to peruse further before deciding on whether it would be useful to us.

Mindy made a great point : Kids can help us slow down and we need to be sure to slow down for them instead of asking them to speed up for us.

Again, so natural for us: Don't inhibit the play. Who cares if the clothes get dirty? My kids are almost never sick, and I have never been germ-wary. They have built up some great immunity, I believe.

    and Jennifer Ward's site.

Her newest book is for pre-teens Let's Go Outside.

    Listen to Your Buds

This new Listen To Your Buds initiative aims to put kids in charge of their long-term hearing health. May is Better Hearing and Speech Month.

About 1,500 Washington, DC, metro area elementary students will attend a fun and informative “Listen To Your Buds” concert with artist Billy Jonas at the George Washington University Lisner Auditorium. The event starts at 10:30 am on Wednesday, April 29th and will be emceed by “Absolutely Mindy” from Sirius-XM Satellite Radio’s Kids Place Live channel.

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and Parents' Choice Foundation have formed a national coalition of leading musicians who are popular with young children to promote safe usage of personal audio technology. The first "Listen To Your Buds" concert was held in Chicago in November, and the organizations plan more events for school children in Los Angeles and New Orleans later this year. Visit www.listentoyourbuds.org to see a video showing the kids’ energetic reaction to this first event.

Many kids depend on personal audio technology to listen to music, play games and talk on the phone. The technology itself is not the problem, but the length of time and volume levels may pose a threat to future hearing. A new public awareness campaign aims to educate kids to develop healthy habits before they suffer permanent hearing loss.

    Did you know?...
...sustained listening to sounds over 85 decibels can cause permanent hearing loss.
…a newly announced European Union sponsored study found that listening to sounds at high volumes for more than an hour a day each week will likely cause permanent hearing loss after five years.
… that research published in August predicts that the prevalence of hearing loss in the United States will rise significantly due to the growing use of personal audio technology, among other factors.
… that a recent poll shows that more than half of high school students report at least one symptom of hearing loss.
… that you can protect your kids’ hearing by simply turning down the volume; limiting listening time; and upgrading headphones.

    Mindy and Zooglobble

Mindy "sneak attacked" Stefan Shepard from Zooglobble.com. Stefan is the "wizard" of kindie rock; keeping his ear to the ground, keeping everyone up-to-date on the latest news in kids' music.

Stefan talked about his recent "KidVid Tournament 2009" and how Secret Agent 23 Skidoo won against The Jimmies by, get this, 23 votes! Stefan and Mindy tried to Sneak Attack Secret Agent 23 Skidoo, but got the machine and left a rambling message (what else).

Stefan mentioned the new Ziggy Marley CD as well as the Renee and Jeremy CD coming soon -- we hope that KPL picks up a track from it.

Stefan mentioned that he loves the unpredictability of the Absolutely Mindy show, as do we.......

Mindy started off with a little set of SteveSongs songs. I guess to lament that he is leaving the 13under13 after having been on for a VERY long time. We love Steve, but it is time for something new in the countdown. Too bad that he left the countdown just days before we will see him play at the White House (fingers crossed).

My kids are totaly ga-ga over Pink!, so they are thrilled with the new song. If everything works out, we'll see Rocknoceros this week too.... WOW!

What Doctor Noize had to Say About Mindy

A Wee Bit Of Clarification On Yesterday’s Noizeletter…:

For those with XM Radio... You may have heard me on XM Kids Radio yesterday. XM Kids Program Director, Absolutely Mindy, called me live on her nationally broadcast show yesterday to assist me in perpetrating this little hoax to a nationwide audience. People like Mindy do not come around very often; when they do they are generally institutionalized. I love Mindy so much -- she is like those legendary DJ's in the early days of rock radio with an unerring sense of fun who played and said whatever they liked on air. Mindy is planning to play my fake High School Musical 4 track Follow Your Dreams on air a few times in the next week. This is because she is Absolutely Crazy. So listen for it! Her show is great.
