It's quiet here, isn't it?

Now that I'm back home and have time to start fan blogging again, it is no longer necessary (well, if it was ever really necessary....)...

The crew at KPL has started a Facebook Fan Page SIRIUS XM'S KiDS Place LiVE, which is way more active than this blog ever was.

So head on over there to read the latest and greatest.

Noah and the Great Science Experiment

Noah is attempting to break the world record of a single human wearing the most t-shirts at once.

Each photo, after the initial no shirt shot, represents 10 shirts. You shoulda seen him trying to walk around! It was hilarious!!!! Sort of like a penguin on steroids. He fell over once, and couldn't get back up.

We are shooting for double digits next. I don't know what is more sad, that we are all so hyped up about this, or that we have over 100 t-shirts between Noah, Bil and me! Gonna have to go find some 2XL or 3XL though, if we want to keep going.

How to Make a Terrarium

You will need:

A clear 2-liter bottle with bottle cap
Potting soil (or dirt from your backyard)
Rye grass seeds
Clear packing tape
A spray bottle filled with water
Scissors or an Exacto knife (and your caring adult's help/permission)
Ladybugs! (or any bug you find and would like to observe for a while)

How to Assemble:

1) Rinse out an empty 2-liter bottle
2) Have your adult help you carefully cut the top off of the bottle. Make the cut about three inches down from the lid of the bottle (see picture). Be sure to keep this part all in one piece!
3) Fill bottom of container with about 4 to 5 inches of potting soil
4) Sprinkle a few teaspoons of rye grass on top of the soil and cover with a little bit more dirt-- just a quarter of an inch or so
5) Wet the soil and spray the walls of the bottle with water
6) Add bugs if desired
7) Place the top back on the bottle and tape it together with packing tape.

Ta-da! You have a terrarium! The grass should start to grow in just a few days. Every week or so check the moisture level, unscrew the bottle cap and add a few teaspoons of water as needed. If you put bugs in there make sure they have the food they need (like aphids for ladybugs). Remember that bugs don't live very long, so this won't be a forever pet. You can also make this bug-free and have fun watching how tall the grass will grow. You could also add stickers or other decorations to the bottle, just make sure some sunlight can get through. Enjoy!

Alyssa's terrarium was made about seven weeks ago and although the cricket has passed on to The Great Terrarium in the Sky, the grass is still growing!

Theme Song Winner announced!

Was it because he was the first to send in an entry? Was it because Mindy went to see him at Jammin' Java this weekend? Was it because it is just an incredible theme song? We'll never know, but ....

The winner is ....

JUSTIN ROBERTS!

We are very happy with her choice, of course. And hope that we enjoy hearing his entry every day :)

Book Hour - Lunch Lady

On today's show, Mindy interviewed Jarrett J. Krosoczka, author of many books, including Lunch Lady and the Cyborg Substitute.

Camille and I both loved the idea that the lunch lady has super cool spy tools, like a spork that is really a phone and a spatula that is a helicopter. I know we'll be keeping our eye out for the books.

Even more, our pals Recess Monkey has written a Lunch Lady Theme song that is available on the website www.lunchladycomics.com/.

Robbie's African Adeventure - Part II

Have you followed Robbie's trip to Uganda? He's posted a whole bunch of fabulous photos and blog posts on his website: Robbie Schaefer. It sounds like he had an amazing trip, and we can't wait to hear what more comes of his wonderful trip.

Pepperoni Stick, Eh?

Mindy,

I knew it!  My Go-Tart did not break Frankfurter's heart!  The crazy Pepperoni Stick that's been sighted everywhere is actually running around with a Chewy Dipps granola bar, not my sweet Go-Tart.  The look-alikes have been showing up everywhere my Go-Tart and her Hot Dog BOY-Friend have been, pretending to be them.  These PepperDipps imposters are nothing but trouble.  Meanwhile my poor Go-Tart and Frankfurter are being hounded everywhere they go.  Kids are yelling, "There they are!" and chasing them all across the country.  They're scared, they're lost, and I'm afraid my sweet Go-Tart and her Hot Dog BOY-Friend will never get home.  If you really love Frankfurter, you'll stop spreading rumors about my poor sweet Go-Tart and help these two young processed foodstuffs find their way home.

Your pal,

ScribbleJim

Peter Himmelman in the Rumpus Room

Our year in DC is coming to a close. While I doubt that it was our last Rumpus Room Concert (we had been to 3 or 4 before this year), it is our last for a while. And what fun it was! A nice crowd came out to see Peter Himmelman. I wasn't sure if the show was going to be Peter solo or not, and it turned out that a nice band had been cobbled together -- I think Peter said that they had only rehearsed once, earlier in the day.

The show was incredibly fun (and funny). Little Rhett stole the show with his antics. Hey, if your mom is the boss and your dad is in the band, you kind of get a little crazy, huh? The kids in the audience had great fun, making large dancing circles. Even the babies got into it; two babies did a little call and response screeching.

While we love Peter's CDs, I wasn't sure what to expect from a live show. It was wonderful! He has a wry sense of humor, played just right. One kid told Peter it was his birthday, and Peter made up a song right there on the spot, as well as freestyling verses into other songs. Wonderful and fun!

We're so happy that we got this chance to see Peter Himmelman perform live!

WHO’S GONNA WRITE IT?! Anybody but Mindy. That means YOU! Civilians welcome, artists welcome, Wilco welcome…

If you haven't been following along on the Absolutely Mindy show, ScribbleJim took care of Mindy's pet hot dog "Frankfurter" while Mindy was away at camp. But then Frankfurter went missing...only to be found again snuggling with a Go Tart. (Hope I got that almost right.)

    We Saw Robbie today!

With Robbie's big news this week, we knew we had to get to the Robbie Schaefer kids' show at Jammin' Java this morning and wish his safe travels. Robbie is heading to Uganda this evening for a wonderful kids' music exchange. To read more, visit Robbie's blog.

The show at Jammin' Java, though a Sunday morning one, was well attended and full of kids and parents having a GREAT time! We love the way Robbie works with the audience and his wonderful songs. His new "Water" song really is wonderful -- it reminds us of the stylings of Justin Roberts that really get us in a good mood. But it is Robbie, all Robbie. And we all love him.

Chloe claims that Robbie is her BFF and is ready to tell him everything that is on her mind (poor Robbie).

    Robbie's African Adeventure

In case you haven't heard yet (though you probably heard before we did), Robbie is headed to Africa next week forwhat seems to be a really incredible journey. This is a great next step in kids' music. Uniting children throughout the word, so as they age, they have a worldview that can help to improve lives everywhere. The CMN work that XM does is wonderful in helping our kids build more compassion, but this "worldview" is yet another wonderful way that KPL is helping our kids to learn about the lives of others, and I salute the KPL team for this.

We wish you well on this journey, Robbie, and look forward to hearing more as you travel. Bon voyage (though if we follow our plans, we will wish you well in person tomorrow).

Read about robbie's trip on his blog.

Lunch Money in the Rumpus Room

Today we were thrilled to get back to the Rumpus Room at XM in DC after over a month and see Lunch Money perform live in the XM LiVE Performance Studio! We always love to hear Lunch Money live, and while we heard a couple of the new ones in NY, we heard another couple of new songs and think they rock! We cannot wait for the next CD!

We had a fabulous time in the Rumpus Room. The KPL "minion" Ali does a great job keeping everyone entertained and organized. Mindy and various family members were there for the show.

For various reasons, the band was not planning on playing their KPL hit "It Only Takes One Night To Make a Balloon Your Friend," but a kid requested it. Then there were some technical difficulties, so the band played it, not for airing, but as filler while the connections/wires were being fixed. At the end of the show, someone gave Molly (I think) a red mylar balloon, and guess what happened?? It flew away! Red ones go to Paris, don't they?

Go check out the Lunch Money concert schedule and get out to see them live if you can!

    Make Your Own Pet Wave

Here's all the information you need to make your own pet wave! (With a grown-up's help.)

You're going to need a clear plastic bottle with a cap, baby oil, water and some food coloring. (Hint: the smaller the bottle, the less baby oil you'll need.)

First, fill the bottle half-way with water and add a couple of drops of food coloring. Mine's blue, like the ocean, so that I can pretend to be a shark. ScribbleJayne made her pet wave yellow, no special reason, she just likes yellow. Next, fill the top half of the bottle with baby oil. Twist or glue the cap on the bottle really tight (so your pet doesn't get away) and... you've got a new pet! Just tip the bottle back and forth to get your wave going. Pretty cool, huh?

What color will you make your pet wave? Do you have any other pets?

    Your pals,
    ScribbleJim & ScribbleJayne

Brady Rymer at XM - 12 Jun 2009

Yesterday, we were excited to get back to the Rumpus Room at XM in DC and see Brady Rymer and the Little Band That Could perform live in the XM LiVE Performance Studio! We've seen them a couple times before, once in Georgia, and love his enthusiasm, music and smile.

We spent a bit of time in the upstairs waiting area. The kids were asked if they would like to make some recordings for possible use on the station, and they all loved it -- they had to say "Sirius/XM Kids Place Live!" Camille ran around chasing one very fast little toddler who feels right at home at XM, wandering down this way and that.

We finally got to head into the performance theater. Brady in the band wandered in before Mindy got to play her "joke" on them. Brady jumped right into playing, starting off with the logical choice "Here Comes Brady Rymer and the Little Band That Could." The band members at this show were Brady on lead, Seth Farber on keybaords, Liz Queler on mandolin and vocals and then Chris Roselli stuck over in the drum box.

The concert was fantastic. Great energy, great selection of songs (though I would have loved to hear 15 more, of course). The audience really got into "I Found It!" Brady played older songs along with songs from the latest CD and even a couple new tunes, which we can't wait to hear on his next CD! He finished up on a high note with the popular "Road Trip." What fun!

We had a great time hanging out for a long time after the show. I can't believe that we won't get to go back to XM for at least a month! A whole month! How will we make it that long?
